The papers of this prominent German-American lithographer include correspondence, clippings, financial records, notes, manuscripts, photographs, speeches, and wills. The majority of these materials focus on Prang's interest in chromolithography, art education, and the publishing of booksand greeting cards. Some of the materials are associated with the Prang Educational Company. Some of the correspondence is from Prang biographers,Walter Kubilius and Burnis M. Kelly, as well as former Prang employee, Daniel Fausel.

Louis Prang was born in Germany where took an active part in the Revolution of 1848. After emigrating to the U.S. Prang served as a mapper during the Civil War and transferred these skill to the business of printingg and lithography.
